The Bread of Life

In this week's readings, God hears the Israelites plea for food.  He answered them with manna and quail, real food. (Exodus 16:2-15)  In John, Chapter 6, after the feeding of the 5,000, Christ said the reason they sought after Him was they ate the bread and were filled. (John 6:26)  He also warned us not to seek bread that is perishable, but bread that can give eternal life. (John 6:27)       Christ said God gave manna to the Israelites, and He was going to give the Church something better. (John 6:28-36)  He gave us His own Body and Blood that we can receive daily in Holy Communion.  Jesus told them His Body and Blood was real food and real drink. He also told everyone that they must receive it in order to have eternal life. (John 6:51-58)  He actually said it four times; more than anything else in the Bible.       At the Last Supper, He ordained and authorized the Apostles to consecrate Christ's Body and Blood and to appoint successors to do it for all time, and that includes today. (Luke 22:19)  The ones who failed to believe walked away just as Judas did at the Last Supper.(John (6:66)-71) (John 13:21-30)
