The story of the Prodigal Son is the story of Western Civilization over the last 500 years. (Luke 15:11-32) It is a story of a society which has been turning its back on God and His Church in search of the allurements the world has to offer, and it has spent all of its spiritual collateral in the process. The Church gave us the university system, which was originally centered on Christ, the center of the universe.
The Church gave us the hospitals to care for the sick. Government has tried to impose itself on these great institutions and have proven incapable of improving on them. They have taken away charity and replaced it with debt. When the order of civilization is changed from its original intent, that is what leads us from the Father’s house. We, as a society, end up like the Prodigal Son. We, like the Prodigal Son, need to return to the Father’s House to enjoy the dignity that comes from being in a family. (Luke 15:11-32)
